The holy month of Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. During Ramadan fasting is observed from dawn until sunset. During this time, Muslims abstain from eating and drinking (including water).

This year, Ramadan is expected to start on 16th May and finish on the evening of Friday 15th June.

Healthy ways to open and break your fast

Open your fast by eating slow-releasing food such as porridge, chapatti, lentils, beans, basmati rice or a handful of nuts.  Even though it's tempting, foods high in saturated fats should be avoided such as ghee and deep friend samosas and pakoras.  Try a handful of dates with some water as a healthy way to break the fast.
