Nicky discovered a new love for running through Livewell.  So much so that she supports new people to tie up their laces and hit the streets with local jogging group, Derby Joggers.  Our kind-hearted volunteer has broadened her creative sewing skills during lockdown to get organised for Christmas!

My Livewell journey

I joined in 2017 to exercise more and lose a bit of weight, and also for some ‘ME' time as I am a carer for my son with health problems. As well as attending classes I completed Couch to 5k and found that I really enjoyed running. After my year on the Livewell programme I became a volunteer to help others. I also completed the jog leader training because I loved running so much that I decided if I can do it, then anyone can give it a go!

My volunteering role

I am jog leader with Derby Joggers – a friendly jogging group suitable for people of all jogging abilities.  We run a Couch to 5k course which is available for Livewell clients to join.

Before the pandemic I was helping out at the Alvaston Hub, supporting clients on their journey and introducing Livewell to new people at their new starter meetings.  For the last few months I've been supporting clients in Livewell's virtual support sessions.  I also enjoy sharing my experiences and offering words of encouragement in the Facebook support group

Me in 3 words

Kind. Determined. Fun.

My passions/interests

Running, reading and cross stitch.  I have spent lock down making Christmas cards!

My best achievement

I ran three 10k races in 12 months, only one year after completing Couch to 5k.

What you might be surprised to know

I was part of the team which launched the first Ann Summers shop in Derby (before I had my children!)

My top lifestyle tip

To stay hydrated get 2 litres of water ready in the morning to sip throughout the day.

My favourite motivational quote

You are only competing against yourself.

My tips for surviving lockdown

Use the extra time you have available to do things you wouldn’t normally do – those long overdue odd jobs, trying a new hobby, reading that novel you’ve had on your reading list for ages or catching up on a box set or film you've been meaning to watch.  I've recently started a mental health online course!

Be kind to yourself, do things you enjoy and also do spur of the moment activities.
